An external backpack is where Open Badges from multiple sources can be collected and displayed.
Connecting your badges from Totara to an external backpack is no longer an option as of August 2019, as Mozilla Open Badges is no longer supported by the Mozilla Foundation. However, you can add your badges to a backpack manually, as shown below.
Adding badges manually
If required, you can add your acquired badges to your external backpack manually. Here we will add a badge from the Totara Academy to an external backpack, Badgr.
First, navigate to your user profile from the top-right corner of the navigation bar.
Once you've accessed your user profile, scroll down to see the badges you've acquired.
Select the badge you want to add to your external backpack. In this example we want to add the Totara Learn Course Creator badge.
Once you have selected the badge, you can select the Download button to download your badge as a PNG.
Next you need to access your external backpack to add your badge. If you haven't already set up an account for an external backpack, you need to do this now.
It's important that you use the same email address for the backpack that you used for the Totara site, as the emails must match for the badge to be registered.
On Badgr, you would select Add Badge, then drag and drop your PNG file into the dialog box.
If the email address linked to the badge does not match the email address, you will receive a warning that the upload has failed.
The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using Open badges in Totara Learn. Here you can learn more on how to use the open badges, see best practice, and give it a go yourself.
