Our approach

Offering an inclusive platform for learning, performance and engagement is essential for organisations to provide development opportunities for people who have an impairment, disability and/or the need for assistive technologies.

Totara is committed to developing products that meet international web accessibility guidelines and reporting this compliance openly as well as ensuring that accessibility and inclusion is a part of our solution, design and development processes. We continuously evaluate our product against guidelines and make necessary improvements to make our products accessible. This process includes using industry-standard tools to test accessibility during and after development, with the aim of achieving WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. Beyond meeting compliance, we also continuously aim to improve the user experience for users with impairments, disabilities and/or using assistive technologies.

We strive to be WCAG 2.1 AA compliant across the content of all of our products, as well as creating tools within our product that encourage the creation of accessible content. This means that we are continuously improving accessibility as an ongoing effort to strive for compliance and improve usability.

Accessibility Compliance Reports

With every major release we provide an Accessibility Compliance Report (ACR) based on the Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This is a report which outlines our understanding of each success criterion for WCAG 2.1 A and AA, details on the areas where we support the various criteria, as well as outlining the evaluation methods used. Totara 13 Learn, Perform and Engage support the vast majority of Success Criteria at level A and AA. The areas that partially support a success criterion will provide a clear description of the implementation, how it impacts users, the extent to which it impacts users and the short- and/or long-term plan to improve this area. As a continuous effort to improve accessibility, the ACR for every major release will be updated according to any improvements that are made during any relative minor release.

In May 2018 Section 508 became functionally equivalent to WCAG 2.0 Level AA meaning that our ACR can also be utilised to measure Section 508 compliance.

We've prepared ACRs for the following product releases:
